US bestows $500k newly renovated forensic lab to the NDLEA
Will Stevens, the United States Consular General has given a $500k newly renovated forensic laboratory to the NDLEA in Lagos State. This was disclosed by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency team in Lagos State. They said the renovated laboratory would improve their effectiveness in eradicating drug trafficking and substance abuse in Nigeria.
According to the agency, Will Stevens reported that the investment is to ensure that all US partners have access to top-notch equipment that aids in detecting and analyzing suspicious substances that will be collected from crime scenes. Additionally, the US Centre for Disease Control and Prevention discovered that the rate of death caused by drug and substance overdose keeps increasing with which over 100,000 causalities were recorded in 2023.
The Consular then commended the NDLEA chairman, his team, as well as the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime Country Representative, Danilo Campisi, and his team for their fight against drugs.
Wills' speech read, "We are faced with a common threat of illegal drugs and drug trafficking. Illicit drug production, trafficking, and consumption are linked to organized crime, illegal financial flows, corruption, and increasingly terrorist financing. There is also an individual impact of illegal drugs, for those who struggle with drug abuse and their families and friends."
He further urged everyone to join forces to fight the issue of drug trafficking for it is a" transnational crime" that endangers us all.
