The United States has recovered $53m from contracts illegally awarded to Diezani Alison-Madueke.

Diezani Alison-Madueke is a Nigerian politician in her early 60s.
She is the first female President of OPEC.

It was the United States Department of Justice that revealed this. This revelation is the final resolution of two civil cases in forfeiture of the luxury assets that were laundered.

This case is linked to Diezani Alison-Madueke and others.
She was the former minister of petroleum resources.

The people named to be involved in this case are Diezani Alison-Madueke, Olajide Omokore and Kolawole Akanni who is a Nigerian businessman.

The department of justice mentioned that these assets that were forfeited are “proceeds of foreign corruption offenses”.

The department released a statement on their website and mentioned that it was about $53.1 million in cash that was recovered from them. They also recovered a promissory note with a principal value of $16 million.

From the court documents, Kolawole Akanni and Olajide Omokore had planned with others to pay bribes to this woman, Diezani Alison-Madueke, who oversaw Nigeria’s state-owned oil company.

The woman then used her position to get and secure some contracts to the companies of her accomplice.

For some years now, the 3 of them have been facing trial over alleged fraud in securing contracts and money laundering.

Diezani was the minister of petroleum resources between the years of 2010 to 2015.

Her work as minister of petroleum was during Goodluck Jonathan's administration.
She left Nigeria before Jonathan handed over to President Buhari in 2015.

We also learnt that she allegedly stole $2.5 billion from the government while she was still serving as a minister but she denied these.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has since that time begun the process of extraditing her.

The government has also gotten a hold of her properties in Ikoyi in lagos.
