A statement from the head of public affairs of the office of the West Africa Examination Council Moyosore Adesina, on Tuesday evening made it known that out of the 85,600 registered candidates, only 80,904 say for the examination that cuts across 568 centers across the country.
He made it known that out of the total number of over 80,000 who took the exam 39,790 which is about 49.18 percent were male and 41114 representing 50.82 percent of the candidates were females.

According to WAEC, 211 of the 80,904 candidates who took the exams had different kinds of special needs. They included 33 who had vision problems, 21 who had hearing problems, and 30 who were Albinos.
The examination body WAEC declared that a total of 78,419 results, accounting for 96.93 percent of the candidates had been fully processed and uploaded for viewing but 2,485 (3.07 percent other candidates’ results are still under processing due to some errors that are traceable to the candidates themselves, and promised that all necessary action is in place to make sure that those results are made available as soon as possible.

Pass Rate

It's compulsory for any student aspiring to obtain a higher level of education to have at least 5 credits in any O-level examination, which includes the West African Examination Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) conducted by WAEC. It is required by the student to have these credits in 5 subjects including English Language and Mathematics as one of the criteria which make them eligible for admission into tertiary education.
WAEC reported that only 44.29% of the candidates who took the exam, which is 35,830 in total, got credit and above in at least five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics.
Of the 35,830 candidates who met this requirement, 49.21% (17,631) were males and 50.79% (18,199) were females, according to the examination body.
WAEC also said that 46,267 candidates, which is 57.19% of the total, got credits in five subjects with or without English Language and, or Mathematics.
Caution
WAEC said the pass rate analysis for WASSCE for Private Candidates is different from that of WASSCE for school candidates. The former can choose how many subjects to write, while the latter have to write eight or nine subjects compulsorily.
“…The private candidates can register for eight or nine subjects, but they don't have to write all. They can write even one subject, depending on the problem they want to solve. For them, the examination is just a way to correct a problem they have. So, it will not be correct or fair to say that their performance in this examination is low,” WAEC said.
The examination body may be talking about the performance of school candidates’ examinations which has been around 75 per cent lately. Also, the number of candidates who write the school WASSCE is usually more than one million and sometimes up to 1.5 million.
Withheld Results
WAEC despite the declaration of the release of the examination results has reported that a total of 7,192, which represent 8.89 percent of the results are held. The council said those results were allegedly suspicious of malpractice.
The examination body earlier announced “The investigations are ongoing and the results will be shown to the right Committee of the Council for them to decide. After that, the candidates who are involved will hear from the committee directly,”
The candidates have been advised to check the status of their results before moving forward to the certificate platform where the digital certificate that had been uploaded along with their results can be obtained.
