Newcastle United’s Dan Burn had a face off with Jan Bednarek of Southampton during their meeting on August 17, 2024.

The clash occurred in the tunnel at St James’ Park, as the players were walking back onto the pitch for battle in the second period.

Burn and Bednarek were seen pushing and shoving each other in the tunnel at half-time, with the former pushing the latter and grabbing his shirt before they were separated.

It appeared the spat stemmed from Fabian Schar being dismissed in the 28th minute for an incident involving Ben Brereton Diaz.

With Schar on the ball, Brereton barged into the defender and sent him crashing to the ground.

Fabian Schar reacted angrily and shoved Ben Brereton Diaz, before pushing his head towards the Chilean international.

Brereton Diaz theatrically fell to the turf clutching his face and Schar was brandished a red card for a headbutt, while the Saints’ attacker, who caused the issue was booked for the initial push.

Newcastle were not happy with the decision, however a VAR examination decided that referee Craig Pawson made the right call in sending off Schar.

Fabian Schar has now been suspended for three-matches, having been dismissed for his unsportsmanlike conduct.

This leaves boss Eddie Howe short of options in the defensive department, with Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles also still recovering from ACL injuries sustained last season.

The Magpies will likely make one addition to their defense this summer and have been linked with Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi, but several of their offers have been rejected thus far.

Moreover, Newcastle United defeated Southampton 1-0, with Brazil international Joelinton scoring the lone goal of the encounter in the 45th minute.

The Magpies commenced the new campaign victoriously, and that has pushed them to 6th position on the Premier League table, equal number of points as the teams above them.

Eddie Howe’s side return to action on Sunday, August 25, 2024, visiting the Vitality Stadium to play Bournemouth.

Southampton, who sit 17th on the Premier League table and started the season on a losing note, battle Nottingham Forest next at the Saint Mary's on August 24, 2024.

Meanwhile, the Premier League and English FA are yet to speak over the fracas that happened at the tunnel between Burn and players of Southampton, and it is unknown if any punishment would be handed to the involved parties following the occurrence.
