Popular Nigerian musician Rema has shared a word for his fellow artists who claim not to be under the Afrobeats genre. Rema is a well-known award winning Afrobeats musician. His real name is Divine Ikubor but he is known popularly as Rema.

During the 16th Headies Awards which was held on the 3rd of September, rema bagged 3 Awards and while he was giving a speech, he addressed this matter.
He shared that whatever the name his fellow artists call their genre of music, they will all still come together under the afrobeats category when it comes to award shows.

He shared that they will all still jam when it comes to an afrobeat award as they will all still be classified under Afrobeats category
He said, “I must say it is very important that I should let everyone know that I’m not here because of the awards. I’m here because it is important to support our institutions. And when I said institutions, I mean the bodies that support you to be able to achieve these major successes; the media houses, award organisers, you know. We are in a very sensitive period if we don’t give our attention to our institutions, we will miss this chance that we have. And we will never have this chance again"

In his words “Be it afrorave, afro this, afro that, last last, we go jam for afrobeats award. So, this is our chance. are not the first to do it. Reggae has done it before.”
This is after some Nigerian stars started dissociating themselves from being tagged as Afrobeats.
