WeightWatchers announced its plan to offer a compounded version of Novo Nordisk's weight-loss drug, Wegovy, as part of its weight-management programs. This announcement led to a nearly 47% surge in WeightWatchers' stock price, marking its highest closing in over two months.

The decision comes amid increasing demand for weight-loss medications like Wegovy and Eli Lilly's Zepbound, which have experienced shortages. As a result, some telehealth companies have begun offering compounded versions of semaglutide, the active ingredient in Wegovy, as alternatives.

WeightWatchers' new offering will start at $129, and CEO Tara Comonte emphasized the company's commitment to providing effective alternatives in light of ongoing medication shortages. The company's stock has faced significant volatility, plummeting from over $100 in 2018 to below $1 in August 2024 due to declining revenues and liquidity concerns.

In related news, the Outsourcing Facilities Association recently sued the FDA regarding its decision to remove Eli Lilly's drugs from the shortage list, despite ongoing supply issues.
