Early Life
Governor Sanwo-Olu attended Government Demonstration School in Surulere, Lagos before proceeding to Ijebu-Ife Grammar School where he completed his secondary education. He graduated from the University of Lagos where he bagged a degree in Surveying and an MBA. He also went to John F. Kennedy School of Government, London Business School and Lagos Business School. Before he became the governor of Lagos State, he worked as a treasurer at the former Lead Merchant Bank from 1994-1997 after moving to the United Bank for Africa where he became the head of foreign money market. He also worked at First Inland Bank now known as First City Monument Bank (FCMB) as a deputy general manager and branch head. He served as the chairman of Baywatch Group Ltd and First Class Group Ltd.
Political career
Governor Sanwo-Olu's political career began in 2003 when he became the Special Adviser on Corporate Affairs to the former deputy governor of Lagos, Femi Pedro. He was appointed as the acting Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget. During President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's tenure as governor of Lagos, Sanwo-Olu was made the Commissioner for Commerce and Industry. In 2007, he was made Commissioner for Establishments, Training and Pensions by the then Governor Babatunde Fashola. In 2016, Babajide Sanwo-Olu was made the Managing Director of the Lagos State Development and Property Corporation (LSDPC) under the tenure of Akinwunmi Ambode.
Babajide Sanwo-Olu attained position as the 15th Governor of Lagos State. when he was elected under the umbrella of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on 29th May 2019 after succeeding the then Governor Akinwunmi Ambode. His win at the governorship primaries in 2018 was a miracle because it came as a shock for the public and even the party members when he defeated Ambode who was supposed to contest for a second term in office. He won the gubernatorial elections, defeating his opponent Jimi Agbaje of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) and was sworn in on 29th May 2019. He was re-elected for a second term in 2023 after defeating Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour of LP and Abdulazeez Olajide Jandor of PDP. He is assisted by his deputy Obafemi Hamzat.
