Chief Godswill Akpabio is 15th President of the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Godswill Akpabio was born on 9th December 1962 to the family of Chief Obot Akpabio and Madam Lucy Akpabio in Ukana, Ikot Ntuen, Essien Udim LGA. He is 60 years old. Akpabio lost his father at a very tender age and was raised by his mother.

Education

Godswill Akpabio attended Methodist Primary School, Ukana in Akwa-Ibom State and Federal Government College in Port Harcourt. Akpabio was the senior prefect during his college days. He then proceeded to the University of Calabar (UNICAL) where he studied Law. Akpabio's leadership and career started right from his university days. While he was in the university, he was elected as the speaker of the parliamentary year.

It may be surprising to some that Akpabio is from a long line of politicians. His grandfather, Okuku Ado Akpabio was the warrant chief in Ekot Ekpene province. His cousin, Justice Nsima Akpabio was a senator during the 2nd Republic. His uncle, Dr. I. U. Akpabio served as the Minister of Education and Internal Affairs in Eastern Nigeria.

Godswill Akpabio is married to Ekaette Unoma Akpabio, a humanitarian and founder of a non-governmental organization Family Life Enhancement Initiative (FLEI).

They have five children together, four daughters and one son.

Political Career

Akpabio worked with Paul Usoro and Co law firm as an associate partner before proceeding to EMIS Telecoms Limited, a telecommunications company in Nigeria. He was promoted to the post of the CEO at the same company. He also served as the National Publicity Secretary of the Association of Telecommunication Companies in Nigeria (ATCOM).

Akpabio was appointed the Commissioner for Petroleum and Natural Resources by the then Governor of Akwa-Ibom State, Obong Victor Attah. He served as the governor of Akwa-Ibom State from 2007 to . He won the Senate seat of the Akwa-Ibom North-West senatorial district in 2015. He became the Senate Minority Leader of the South South under the People's Democratic Party (PDP) in 2015.

Akpabio resigned as the Senate Minority Leader in August 2018 after he cross-carpeted from PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC). In August 2019, he was sworn in as the Minister for Niger Delta Affairs under President Muhammadu Buhari administration.

In June 2022, Godswill Akpabio resigned from his ministerial position to contest for the APC presidential primaries but later stepped down for Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He was elected as the Senate President of Nigeria in June 2023 after defeating former governor of Zamfara State, Senator Abdulaziz Yari with 63 votes.
