Ghana football legend Asamoah Gyan has heaped praises on Victor Osimhen for his role in Nigeria's AFCON round 16 victory over regional rivals Cameroon.

Taking to his social media handle, Asamoah Gyan lauded Victor Osimhen for his passion and focus in the game. The former Premier League player reeled out indirect but telling metaphors to represent the player. According to him, Osimhen is a rare gem and indispensable team member for the Super Eagles.

"Osimhen plays with passion. That is what every country want their player to do," Gyan wrote on X.

While Gyan's comment has been seen by many as a subtle dig on Ghana national team players who did not give enough to scale through the group stages of the tournament, Osimhen obviously deserved the plaudits for his contributions to the Super Eagles' victory over Cameroon.

The Napoli sensation provided the assist that saw Ademola Lookman fire the Super Eagles into the lead in the 36th minute. Breaking from the stranglehold of his opponents, the Super Eagles benefited from Osimhen's speed and strength as he served the ball on a platter for Lookman after a pacey run to have the Atlanta winger score the opening goal.

Moreover, the 2023 CAF Footballer of The Year was a constant menace to Cameroon defenders who struggled to keep abreast with his horse-speed pace and attacking strength.

Despite leading the attack, he constantly fell back to provide covers and was quick to reposition for the Eagles' counters.

The Scudetto-winner was literally everywhere, picking up Nigeria's long balls, triggering counterattacks, defending against Cameroon offensives, and creating chances for his teammates.

Osimhen was the highest goalscorer in the AFCON qualifiers but has struggled to crawl out of the woods of Jose Peseiro's defensive style of play that has grounded the team's attacking prompts in the tournament.

Nigeria scored just 3 goals in the group stages in the tournament with Osimhen netting the team's first goal - an equaliser against Equatorial Guinea.

Despite the less-than-stellar goalscoring run, Osimhen is still top of his game and has contributed immensely to the Super Eagles qualification for the quarterfinals of the tournament.

The Napoli sensation will be expected to play a big role as well when Nigeria take on Angola for a place in the last four of the tournament.
