Anthony Martial is reportedly edging closer to signing a new Manchester United contract, according to Manager Erik ten Hag.

During a recent press conference, the Red Devils head coach Ten Hag declared openly that the club are in discussions over a contract extension with the 28-year-old Anthony Martial.

Contract discussion with the former AS Monaco player has come as an absolute surprise with the striker initially expected to leave Old Trafford within the next six months.

The space of contract discussions with Martial has been motivated by his current deal which is expected to expire in June 2024.

The striker has had his share of struggles in the red shirt of the Manchester club this season with injuries and limited playing time.

Despite contract talks being initiated by the Premier League club, this doesn’t rule out a transfer for the French international.

Anthony Martial is available to discuss terms with clubs as a free agent and has been linked with a move to Marseille in recent weeks but these rumours seem not to be true.

Martial has spent eight-and-a-half years at Old Trafford following his move from AS Monaco in the summer of 2015, scoring 90 goals in 317 games.

He missed last month's match because of illness and ahead of the FA Cup third-round tie with Wigan Athletic on Monday, January 8, Ten Hag said he does not expect the 28-year-old to be available for the game at the DW Stadium.

However, the Dutch manager confirmed on Thursday, January 4 that Man United have activated one-year extensions for Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Victor Lindelof which will keep the duo under contract until 2025.

How Manchester United fans reacted to Anthony Martial's contract extension report

Manchester United fans have been left angry about the club's reported perspective on Anthony Martial's contract situation.

The Red Devils fans have been disappointed with Martial for some time now, several supporters were frantic after finding out that he could stay at Old Trafford.

One fan took to X, (formerly Twitter), to write: "This club is a joke."

Another commented: "Might be the worst decision in football history. And United have made a lot of those lately."

Anthony Martial's stats this season

The French International striker has scored once in 13 Premier League appearances so far this season.

What's next?

It remains to be seen if the 28-year-old will stay with the 20-time Premier League winning club or depart when his current deal expires in the summer of 2024.

Man United, on the other hand, currently sits eighth in the premier league table with 31 points from 20 games.

Meanwhile, Erik ten Hag and his men with shift focus on the Red Devils FA Cup campaign on Monday, January 8, against Wigan at the DW Stadium.
