Dele Alli has suffered yet another setback in the attempt to rejuvenate his Premier League career after undergoing surgery on a constant groin injury.

What happened to Dele Alli?

Everton manager, Sean Dyche has confirmed that the former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder has been forced to undergo surgery on his groin after a setback in his recovery.

The 27-year-old midfielder last played a competitive match 11 months ago when he sustained a hip injury when on loan at Turkish club side, Besiktas.

However, during his recovery from an operation to address that situation, Dele picked up a groin injury that has kept him out of Sean Dyche’s squad all season.

Everton had hoped the England International would be in contention to make a comeback this month but there is now no timeframe on when the former Tottenham playmaker will be back and the possibilities of Dele reviving his career with Everton appear in doubt.

Speaking ahead of their clash against Luton Town on Saturday, January 27, Dyche said: "Unfortunately he has required surgery. It was a bit of a debate on whether to or not, which is why it took some time. So now he’ll be recovering from that and there’s no timescale on it at this time. We’re just waiting for it developing and the early signs are good".

The former England international had an emotional interview with Gary Neville on The Overlap in August 2023, where he disclosed he spent six weeks in recovery over the summer due to his addiction to sleeping tablets.

The former MK Dons player also spoke about his traumatic childhood and mental health and how he promised to get back to the first-team squad one day. But after returning to training in December, he suffered another setback.

Dele's career has suffered a huge nosedive since featuring for the England national team at the 2018 World Cup and reaching the Champions League final with Tottenham two years later.

Hip and groin injuries restricted him from starting for Everton after joining in 2022 and his last first-team appearance was during his loan spell at Besiktas.

Under the contract of his unique transfer from Tottenham in January 2022, Everton would pay the first £10m of a potential £40m fee if Dele makes 20 appearances for the club.

The former England international has featured 13 times, including 12 as a substitute, and his latest setback means it is increasingly unlikely that Spurs will receive any money for the player.

In a further blow for Everton, Gomes is set to miss out this weekend when they host Luton Town in the FA Cup on Saturday after suffering a calf injury in training.

The midfielder, who secured Everton’s place in the fourth round with the winner against Crystal Palace, has now been sidelined.

Speaking about Gomes's injury, Dyche said "We lost Andre. We're waiting on news how long he will be out, but very unlikely for the next game".

"It's a different kind of injury to what he had before but (also) in his calf".

He added; "It's frustrating because he's been great around the group and itching to play. He felt something in training and stopped to do any more damage. He's having scans".

The influential Abdoulaye Doucoure is facing an extended spell out with another hamstring problem and captain Seamus Coleman will be absent against Rob Edwards’s side with a similar injury.
