The Lagos State government has committed to publish and implement the #EndSARS-inspired report by the Judiciary Committee investigating allegations of human rights abuses against the police.

The state has seen a wave of arson attacks following the # EndSARS protests last year, which resulted in the destruction of public facilities.

In a speech on Thursday about the arduous task of rebuilding Lagos, Sanwo-Olu assured that the panel's recommendations would not be overshadowed.

In his opinion, the panel's report would be useful in strengthening real reconciliation and preventing the recurrence of such violence in the state.

“Lagos experienced a huge loss of assets and resources in the wake of the violence following the #EndSARS protests, as cited on the 21st public transport infrastructure, courts, police stations, private property and iconic assets. .

The body, which was set up to investigate allegations of human rights violations against the police and to determine the cause of the coordinated attacks on Lagos, concluded its sessions on Monday, twelve months after its constitution.

Sanwo-Olu.Sanwo-Olu said, “The panel closed its sessions about three days ago and asked for time to write the reports behind closed doors. We do not know the content of the report, but we would like to say publicly that we will publish it when the report is presented.

“We won't cover anything. It is not what we are and that is not what our government stands for. We will disclose the recommendations of the expert committee. I assure the citizens of Lagos that we will not leave anything to chance.

In October 2020, a social media hashtag #EndSARS began trending in Nigeria and soon became a global movement. The hashtag was used to call for an end to police brutality and for police reform in Nigeria.

The Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) was a unit of the Nigerian Police Force that was established to combat armed robbery and other violent crimes. However, the unit became notorious for its excessive use of force, extrajudicial killings, torture, and extortion of Nigerian citizens.

The #EndSARS movement gained momentum after a video surfaced online showing the killing of a young man by SARS officers in Delta State. The video went viral and sparked outrage across Nigeria and the world. Nigerians took to the streets in protests that lasted for several weeks, demanding an end to police brutality and the disbandment of SARS.

The protests were largely peaceful, but some turned violent after security forces used excessive force to disperse protesters. Many protesters were arrested and some were killed.

The Nigerian government eventually disbanded the SARS unit and promised police reform, but many Nigerians remain skeptical and continue to call for systemic change.

The #EndSARS movement has sparked important conversations about police reform, human rights, and good governance in Nigeria. It has also raised awareness about the role of social media in promoting social justice and holding governments accountable.

The movement has received support from international celebrities and organizations, including Beyoncé, Rihanna, Amnesty International, and the United Nations. It has also inspired similar movements in other African countries, such as Ghana and Kenya.

However, the #EndSARS movement also faced challenges, including censorship and misinformation on social media, attacks on protesters by thugs and security forces, and divisions within the movement itself.

Despite these challenges, the movement has brought attention to the need for police reform and human rights in Nigeria. It has shown that young Nigerians are willing to stand up for their rights and demand change.

In conclusion, the #EndSARS movement is a powerful example of how social media can be used to mobilize and amplify the voices of citizens demanding change. The movement has put pressure on the Nigerian government to address police brutality and improve governance. It has also inspired hope and solidarity among Nigerians and people around the world.
