Manchester United are said to be looking forward to extending Victor Lindelof's contract until 2025, who is rated as 18 million pounds player (according to Transfermarkt).

The Red Devils have registered an interest in activating the defender's deal with one one-year option to make the Swedish player stay until 2025.

Lindelof's current deal with Man United is due to expire next summer which will make him a free agent, but the Old Trafford outfit have put a halt to the uncertainty covering his future.

According to football insiders, Man United wanted to activate the automatic one-year contract extension of Lindelof to prevent the former Benfica player from being able to talk to foreign clubs about a potential move in the summer.

The Red Devils boss, Erik ten Hag sees the Swedish as a crucial part of his defense at Old Trafford, and retaining his service remains the Dutchman's number one target.

The Old Trafford outfit are currently struggling with an injury crisis in the heart of their defense and will feel they have to depend on the performance of 35-year-old Jonny Evans this season.

Raphael Varane is likely to leave Man United before next season, therefore, Lindelof will remain an option to maintain some stability.

The Sweden international, who is currently out injured, has racked up 249 appearances for Man United since joining from Benfica in the summer of 2017 and is now set to add to that tally in the coming months.

Man United have several players who are reaching the final six months of their respective contracts and will soon make decisions on whether to trigger their extension clauses.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka is another player whose current contract can be extended until 2025 if the Red Devils wish, while midfielder Hannibal Mejbri has held discussions with the club about a formal, long-term extension beyond the end of next season.

Meanwhile, Victor Lindelof has represented Man United more than any other United center half this season, emphasizing his importance in the club defense under Ten Hag. The Swede has played 18 times in all competitions this season.

In addition, availability is the greatest ability, especially in the recent United squad full of injuries, and Lindelof’s injury record has been respectable overall.

His consistency has led him to attract interest from elite European clubs, something which cannot be said for several other United players who are arguably at the pinnacle of their career at Old Trafford, going only downwards after leaving.

Atletico Madrid were among several European clubs showing interest in Lindelof during the summer following his availability for United when needed.

However, Man United can look forward to entering negotiations with him in the summer or the other cases, try to let him go for free.

What's next for Lindelof?

The 29-year-old defender missed United's trip to the City Ground due to injury, where Man United suffered a 2-1 defeat against Nottingham Forest on Saturday, December 30.

However, the defender will expect to play a key part for the rest of the season, especially after his contract extension.
