Paul Scholes didn't hold back in criticizing former Manchester United player Jesse Lingard on social media after the forward shared multiple gym workout photos.

The former Manchester United legend didn't mince words when commenting on Lingard's Instagram post on Tuesday, December 9.

What happened?

After Jesse Lingard was released by Nottingham Forest over six months ago, the Englishman is still without a club.

The 31-year-old has been rumored to be considering various moves, but nothing has come to fruition.

Throughout his tenure at Manchester United, Lingard appeared in 232 matches, scoring 35 goals and playing a role in the club's victories in the Europa League, FA Cup, and League Cup.

On the contrary, he struggled to make an impact at Forest, failing to score any goal in all of his 17 Premier League appearances.

Meanwhile, it appears that the 31-year-old has been putting in more effort in training to improve his chances of getting a contract, as evidenced by Lingard's frequent Instagram posts of himself working out in the gym.

The former West Ham loanee has been sharing updates on his fitness routine on social media, showcasing his use of various gym equipment.

Lingard was spotted doing pull-ups, using the rowing machine, and engaging in press-ups at a high-tech gym in Dubai on Tuesday, December 9.

He also took a moment to relax in a chair while wearing recovery compression boots.

However, Manchester United legend Paul Scholes didn't hold back when he criticized him on Instagram.

In a brutal putdown, Scholes questioned if he was going to take football seriously or continue messing around in the gym.

He wrote in the comments: "Are you just gonna f*** about in the gym or are you gonna play football."

This direct call-out from an ex-player has sparked a lot of reaction on the internet and many fans seem to agree with Scholes' perspective on Lingard's situation.

The former United winger has been without a club and all efforts to secure one proved abortive but it appears that Lingard's absence from football is more of a personal choice.

In the summer, Lingard was reportedly considered for a move to Saudi Arabia but ultimately did not receive a contract offer after training with Al-Ettifaq.

He has been without a club since July 2023, following a lucrative deal with the Nottingham Forest in 2022.

What's next for Jesse Lingard?

Lingard's future is uncertain, but it has been revealed that he has been offered to Barcelona as a potential solution to their financial constraints.

As reported by Sport, his salary of £1.7m would comply with the financial fair play restrictions of the Catalan club.

In addition, Ligue 1 side Lille have shown interest in him, and Premier League side Everton are also considering signing him.
