Police And LASTMA officials clash leads to death of passangers in Lagos
A clash between the Police and some LASTMA officers led to the death of 2 people some time ago. This incident occurred on Tuesday the 3rd of October 2023. After this incident, some angry young residents decided to vandalise some buildings located at the Isolo Local Council Development Area office in Lagos.
This incident which occured between the officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and a policeman as well as a driver had caused the death of 2 people. This incident occurred in the Ago Palace area of Isolo, in Lagos state. The incident occurred around 9am that day.
The driver had attempted to escape after he had committed a traffic crime and this led to a chase. The LASTMA officials and a policeman went ahead and chased the man. In the process of trying to catch him, one of the LASTMA officers had begun dragging the steering wheel with the driver and this led to a loss of control of the vehicle and they crashed. They hit some passengers when they crashed.
The victims they hit were 4 in number. The victims included the tricycle driver, a pregnant woman and 2 children who were taken to survive care are the hospital.
Mr Adebayo Taofiq, who is the spokesperson of LASTMA released a statement after the incident and revealed that they have arrested the driver who was trying to escape the law.
He stated “On their way, and in an attempt by the driver to escape, he diverted into Bayo Oyewale Street by Ago Roundabout and rammed into a fully loaded tricycle. While the tricycle operator died instantly, a pregnant woman later died at the hospital while two injured school children are currently in the Intensive Care Unit receiving medical attention"
He revealed that it was while the driver was trying to escape that he lost control while driving roughly and recklessly and hit those victims.
Mr Babtunde Farinloye who is the Lagos Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Babatunde Farinloye, has also confirmed the incident. He confirmed that 4 people indeed were hit in the accident. Angry residents had then taken matters into their hands and vandalized the officers of these officials
They then confirmed only two persons died while the other 2, the children, were in the hospital. They revealed that the operation was that of the LASTMA officials but a policeman had been attached to the operation.
