President Bola Tinubu has suspended the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation. The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, is Mrs Betta Edu. She was suspended on Monday following the controversies about the financial transactions she had authorised within the ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation. The news was revealed in a statement by the presidential spokesperson Ajuri Ngelale. The suspension is to take immediate effect.

The financial transaction she had authorised became a scandal and it led to her suspension. She had approved the payment of hundreds of millions of naira into private accounts of civil servants. She was heavily criticised by Nigerians after the news came out. Mrs Betta Edu ordered the transfer of N585.2 million into the private bank account of a civil servant. The order to pay the money into a civil servants account was given to the Accountant General of the Federation, Oluwatoyin Madein and this happened in December 2023. The money was transfered from the account of the National Social Investment Office to the private account of Bridget Oniyelu. The news of the financial misappropriation leaked a few days after Mrs Edu ordered the suspension of an official for alleged financial crimes. Some documents leaked to the public and this showed that she ordered the payment of N585.2 million into the private bank account of a civil servant.

The statement that was released also mentioned that the suspension of this woman is in line with the president’s commitment to integrity, transparency, and accountability in Nigeria's resources. President Tinubu also instructed the Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to conduct a thorough investigation into the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation's financial transactions. Mrs Edu has also been directed to hand over to the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry.
