Marcus Rashford was axed from the Manchester United team that played against League Two side, Newport County on Sunday afternoon, January 28.

The Manchester United academy graduate has been struggling with fine form this season with the team also performing below expectations.

However, in this article, we will highlight why the England International was omitted from the squad that traveled to Newport on Sunday.

What happened?

Manchester United manager, Erik ten Hag decided to drop the 26-year-old after he failed to report for training on Friday, January 26 due to illness, despite being caught in Belfast's Thompsons Garage nightclub on Thursday, January 25, before he flew home by private jet on Friday morning.

Meanwhile, ten Hag has already warned Rashford about going out partying this season and he’s likely going to face disciplinary actions for his act.

Marcus Rashford was said to have informed the Dutch tactician on Friday, that he wasn't feeling too well.

However, according to reports, the Englishman traveled to Northern Ireland to visit his colleague and former academy teammate Ro-Shaun Williams, who recently put pen to paper on a new contract with Larne FC.

Earlier before the match on Sunday, Man United released a statement confirming that the forward would be absent from the squad due to illness.

In a statement released by the club, they said; "Marcus Rashford not well enough to be in the squad for Newport following illness, he has stayed at Carrington to train as he recovers".

When asked about his decision to drop Rashford from the squad for Sunday's game, manager Erik ten Hag clearly said 'It's an internal issue'.

When pressed further on the question, the former Ajax manager said he would deal with it personally.

This is not the first time Marcus Rashford has offended the no-nonsense coach Erik ten Hag.

In November 2023, the Man United manager criticized Rashford’s unacceptable decision to attend a nightclub hours after a 3-0 Manchester derby defeat. At the time Ten Hag said he spoke with the England forward, who apologised for his actions.

Rashford has scored four goals in all competitions this season, including in Man United’s most recent two Premier League games, against Nottingham Forest and Tottenham Hotspur.

Meanwhile, Manchester United's recent low performances and Rashford's poor current form might hinder his chance to get into the England squad for the upcoming Euro 2024 in Germany.

Newport County vs Manchester United game in brief;

Manchester United secured their place in the FA Cup Fifth Round after beating League Two side Newport on Sunday, January 28.

Rasmus Højlund crowned the scoring for Man United at Rodney Parade, finding the net in stoppage time after they avoided a major scare.

Man United led through early goals from the captain, Bruno Fernandes, and Kobbie Mainoo (his first senior goal), but Newport pulled level at 2-2 early in the second half.

Man United winger, Antony recovered the Red Devils lead before Højlund’s late strike took the team to the next round.

What's next for Man United and Marcus Rashford?

Manchester United will be seen next in action on Thursday, February 1 when they face Wolverhampton Wanderers in the English Premier League.

Therefore, it remains to be seen if Rashford will be included in the team to face Wolves or remain as an off-filed player.
