Rio Ferdinand takes a dig at Douglas Luiz after Manchester United secured a 2-1 victory over Aston Villa on Sunday, February 11.

What happened?

Manchester United saw an early lead at Villa Park through Rasmus Hojlund's strike after Harry Maguire assisted him with a fine header in the 17th minute of play.

Unai Emery's men searched for an equalizer throughout the first half and were denied on two different occasions by strong saves from Andre Onana.

However, Douglas Luiz broke the deadlock for the home team in the 67th minute and took his tally to eight goals of the season in all competitions.

Thereafter, the Brazilian embarked on an extraneous celebration, shimmering in front of Man United goalkeeper and defenders before racing off towards Aston Villa fans.

The celebration of the 25-year-old would eventually prove to be in vain as substitute Scott McTominay restored United's lead in the final minutes of normal time.

The traveling Man United supporters were excited after the final whistle as they recognized the significance of the victory in the race for the Champions League places.

After the final whistle, Rio Ferdinand, a former Man United defender decided to mock Luiz as the Red Devils closed the gap on the top four to six points.

The ex-England national team center-back posted an image of Luiz performing a knee slide after scoring and tagged the midfielder on X (formerly Twitter). He wrote: "You ok @dgoficial?" And followed the question up with four laughing emojis.

Luiz's celebration wasn't the only talking point from the match as the Brazilian was involved in an altercation with Hojlund when the Denmark international was leaving the pitch in the last minutes of the game.

The former Atalanta striker was in no rush to depart the pitch after being substituted and that provoked Luiz, who went over to grab his opponent and usher him off.

Meanwhile, Erik ten Hag was quizzed on Luiz's celebration in his post-match press conference and the coach claimed that the celebration might have motivated his players to win the match. He said; "I don’t have an opinion on it.

He added; "I haven’t spoken to the players. It may have fuelled the players. I don’t know. We have to think about our game. Not about the opposition. We always want to control the game and dictate it. That should be our approach".

The victory is Man United's third in a row in the Premier League as they look to increase a serious challenge in their intentions for Champions League qualification.

What's next for Manchester United?

The Red Devils will be seen next in action when they face Luton Town in the Premier League on Sunday, February 18, at Kenilworth Road stadium.
