The 2023 Africa Cup of Nations commences on Saturday, January 13, 2023, with hosts Ivory Coast clashing with Guinea-Bissau.

Senegal are the defending champions of the 2023 AFCON, which will be played in 2024, from January 13, 2024, to February 11, 2024.

The Teranga Lions go into the tournament as one of the favorites and it will be interesting to see if they defend their crown.

Hosts Ivory Coast are also one of the favorites, alongside nearly every tournament favorites; Egypt, Nigeria, and Algeria.

Anyway, BBC teamed up with Opta to prepare the figures, detailing which nation might be crowned the Champions of Africa.

Opta's prediction model has tipped Senegal as favorites for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations crown.

The prediction model measures the probability of each match outcome - win, draw, or loss - by using betting market odds and the team rankings.

The odds and rankings used are based on historical and recent team performances, with the model noting opponent strength and the difficulty of their path to the final.

This is done through match outcome probabilities, teams in each country's group, and possible knockout stage clashes.

Nigeria aren't odd-on favorite for the crown, but they are also among nations that can achieve glory in Cote d'Ivoire.

Opta provided the tournament predictions for the latter stages of the AFCON, including; Round of 16, Quarter-final, Semi-final, Final, and the eventual winner.

Algeria have an outside chance of winning the tournament, having won the 2019 edition, and defeating Senegal in the final.

Amongst the 16 nations looked into by Opta, Cape Verde are the nation with the least chance of winning the AFCON.

Cape Verde has a 0.9% chance of lifting the title, but statistically, they are all but guaranteed a place in the last 16, with a 52.9% chance.

7-time champions Egypt, who as aforementioned are always in the mix of Nations to win the tournament, but last won it in 2010, have an 8.5% chance of winning the coveted continental trophy.

Morocco, who made Africa proud at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar are 3rd favorite to win the tournament according to Opta, with an 11.1% chance of winning.

North African counterparts, Tunisia, who have won the competition just once in history, have a 6.2% chance of winning the 2023 AFCON.

Bronze winners, Cameroon, at the 2021 edition held on home soil, are almost likely winners of the competition and Opta has handed them a 7.4% chance of clinching the trophy.

It will be interesting to see how star players like Victor Osimhen, Mohamed Salah, and Sadio Mane amongst others power their nation to success.
