You have no right to fix major changes on a rented apartment, Lawyer counsels Nigerian tenants

A Nigerian Lawyer sent a memo to all Nigerian tenants detailing the Landlord's rights as recognized by the law and why tenants should stop going the extra length to furnish a rented apartment. He narrated a story of how one of his clients furnished a rented apartment to his taste but was shocked to the marrow after the Landlord served him a quit notice after a year. The landlord said he wanted to use his apartment and asked that the tenant vacate the premises, despite all the renovation that had been done.

Now, the tenant is pissed because he installed POP in the house without seeking approval from the Landlord. It would have been a different story if the Landlord consented to the installation of the POP, but in this case, the Landlord is recognized to have no fault. So, after spending a lot of money to renovate his rented apartment, he would have to move out since the landlord had sent in a Notice of Quit.

Therefore, "You have no right as a tenant to fix any major changes on the rented apartment without the approval of the Landlord. It is against the Landlord and Tenancy Law and it's an Unlawful act." Beware!
