The Nigerian Police on Monday, March 23, arrested Tajudeen Baruwa after he led members of his faction to take over the national secretariat of the National Union of Road Transport Workers.

The arrest came hours after Baruwa, alongside his supporters, stormed the union’s headquarters in Abuja to take control from the faction headed by Musiliu Akinsanya.

The arrest came hours after Baruwa, alongside his supporters, stormed the union’s headquarters in Abuja to take control from the faction headed by Musiliu Akinsanya.

Earlier reports indicated that the faction under Baruwa had taken over the national secretariat in the early hours of Monday following the dramatic invasion of the premises.

The NURTW factions led by Baruwa and MC Oluomo have been involved in an internal leadership tussle since 2024.

Members of the union had elected MC Oluomo as National President in November 2024. However, a court later ruled in favour of Baruwa when the dispute escalated into a legal battle.

At a higher level, this story reflects a common structural tension in Nigeria. Informal institutions that control critical infrastructure are partially recognized, partially regulated.

That’s a fair point.
The clash between Tajudeen Baruwa and Musiliu Akinsanya really shows how powerful these unions are, even though they’re not fully formal institutions.
When control of something like transport is involved, it goes beyond just union leadership—it affects daily movement and money flows.
