The officials of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) have busted 240 shops in Abia State. These shops were caught producing counterfeit drinks with chemicals and harmful coloring that could potentially damage the internal organs of the consumers. Drinks like Fanta, wine, Coca-Cola, Hennesy, etc were produced in large quantities in a dirty environment and sold to the unsuspecting public at the same price that the original products were sold for.

Nigerians are advised to be cautious of where they purchase their drinks to avoid buying fake ones which are illegally produced in an unhygienic environment. The NAFDAC Director of the South-East zone, Martins Iluyomade, informed the newsmen about the things they had found in the shops. He said, "Every shop you see here is a factory. Every single shop you see is a factory. They are manufacturing products... No 1, there are two sets of illegality going on here. Some set of people are manufacturing products of other people in large quantities. So much so that the other people might not even know the difference between their products and the one that is manufactured here."

Martins added there has been an increase in cases like renal failure and kidney failure due to the consumption of these drinks.
