A criminal gang took over an unnamed Premier League star house and forced the tenant to allow them to turn the house into a cannabis factory.

It was disclosed that the property, which is owned by a top-flight Premier League player, was rented out.

The tenant, who is a female, was surrounded by hundreds of cannabis plants.

The police ended up raiding the place, which prompted the Premier League player and his tenant to be faced with a series of questions.

The Premier League star, who was shocked by the whole incident, had proven his innocence to the police. The player also concluded that his tenant was framed by the gang, and she got released with no charges.

A source said that "this player owns the house in the North West as part of a buy-to-let empire. Another family member manages the properties, but they couldn't believe it when cops found a large-scale cannabis farm."

"The plants were taken away and destroyed, and the player had to show paperwork to prove that while he was the owner of the property, he had someone else living in it."

The Misuse Drugs Act of 1971 states that production and possession of cannabis in an attempt to distribute them to different consumers will attract a prison sentence of 14 years.

Meanwhile, if the owner of the property fails to report any suspicious acts relating to the cannabis plants, they are likely to face the same sentence. The rental income of the landlord can also be seized.

Cannabis farms are a growing problem in the UK, with more than 1,000 houses raided. It was revealed that £130 million worth of plants have been seized, with 1,000 suspects arrested.
