Functions of the Nigerian Police

Everybody knows that the police have to protect the citizens of Nigeria, but here is a more detailed list of the functions of the police as stated in Section 4 of the Police Acts

1. The prevention and detection of crime.
2. The preservation of law and order.
3. The performance of such military duties within and outside Nigeria as may be required of them by or under the authority of the police act or any other act.
4. The apprehension of offenders.
5. The due enforcement of laws and regulations with which they are directly charged.
6. The protection of life and property.

Problems of the Nigerian Police Force

1. Inadequate equipment in the Police force due to insufficient funding. The Police need to have equipment in excess to tackle the insecurity issues in the nation but that is not the case in Nigeria. It isn't surprising for a policeman to say the fuel in their patrol vehicle is finished when it is time to attend to an emergency
2. There is a shortage of quality and educated personnel. The recruitment process is compromised and inefficient as the police do not adequate database to screen their officers. Also, continuous training of the personnel doesn't take place in the Nigerian Police force which is a requirement to keep them agile and sound in their work.
3. Lack of public cooperation due to the stereotype that Police are not nice people. The poor public perception of the criminal justice system (which includes courts, prosecution agencies, etc.) has a negative impact on the police. The level of impersonation in the Police force has also made citizens not trust officers in uniform.
