Just three countries, Nigeria, Ivory Coast, and South Africa, added to their medals tally at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

These nations were impressive at the competition, with the host nation Ivory Coast ending the tournament as champions.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria finished as runner-up and they took the silver medal, while South Africa defeated DR Congo on penalties to win the 3rd-place final.

Following the tournament, it is imperative to take a look at the historical medals table of the competition, as there might have been some noticeable changes to the list.

Nigeria has won the highest number of medals in the tournament history, however, it will interest you to note that the tally doesn't see the most populous black nation move to the summit of the list.

Anyway, let's inundate you with the Medal Table of the Africa Cup of Nations;

1)Egypt are still ranked as the most successful side on the continent, having won the highest number of gold medals in history (7).

Additionally, the Pharaohs have won 3 silver medals, and 3 bronze medals, which cumulatively adds up to 13 medals in history.

2) Cameroon also sit in a favorable position, having won the tournament on five different occasions.

The Indomitable Lions have also won 2 silver medals and 2 bronze medals, totaling 9 medals won in history.

3) Ghana sit 3rd on the list with 10 medals, having won 4 Africa Cup of Nations titles, 5 silver medals, and 1 bronze medal.

4) Nigeria earns its place in the 4th spot with a whooping 16 medals won, with a large chunk being bronze and silver medals.

The Super Eagles have won 3 gold medals, 5 silver medals, and a staggering 8 bronze medals.

5) Ivory Coast didn't move a muscle in the placement, but as widely known, they moved level with Nigeria in terms of gold medals.

Ivory Coast occupies the 5th position in the medals table, having won 9 medals in history; 3 Africa Cup of Nations titles, 2 silver medals, and 4 bronze medals.

6) The Dessert Foxes of Algeria are placed 6th on the medals table, with 5 titles won in history, which are; 2 gold medals, 1 silver medal, and 2 bronze medals.

7) DR Congo also made it to the top 10, with 4 medals won in the country's history; 2 gold medals and 2 silver medals.

8) Zambia have also won an impressive 6 medals in history, and that sees them also amongst the top 10 most successful nations in history.

The Chipolopolo have won 1 gold medal, 2 silver medals, and 3 bronze medals.

9) Sudan and Tunisia have won 4 medals each and in identical fashion, that is; 1 gold medal, 2 silver medals, and 1 bronze medal.

11) Senegal comes next on the list with just 3 medals, 1 gold and 2 silver.

12) South Africa are ranked 12th on the medals table, having won 1 gold medal, 1 silver medal, and 2 bronze medals.

13) Ethiopia are housed in the 13th spot with 3 medals, as their medals won at the tournament are distributed evenly - 1 gold, 1 silver, and 1 bronze medal.

Morocco have also won an identical number of medals like Ethiopia at the Africa Cup of Nations, which are; 1 gold, 1 silver, and 1 bronze medal.

15) Congo, the Congolese have won just 1 medal and that is the gold medal.

16) Mali are yet to get their hands on gold, however, they have won 1 silver medal and 2 bronze medals, meaning they have won 3 medals in total.

17) Burkina Faso are also yet to win the Africa Cup of Nations title, but they have won two medals in history - 1 silver and 1 bronze.

18) Guinea, Libya, and Uganda have won 1 medal each and it is the silver medal.
