The 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) has started on a bright note, with the best of football still expected to be witnessed.

AFCON 2023 commenced on January 13, 2024, and it will culminate on February 11, 2024, with Ivory Coast Vs Guinea Bissau being the first game of the competition.

The Ivorians were sublime in the opening game of the tournament, securing a 2-0 victory over the Djurtus, courtesy of goals from Seko Fofana and Jean-Philippe Krasso.

Several star players will be on parade for their respective nations, including; Mohamed Salah - Egypt, Victor Osimhen - Nigeria, Sadio Mane - Senegal, and Achraf Hakimi - Morocco to mention a few.

24 nations made it to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which is being hosted by Ivory Coast. These countries are:

Algeria, Angola, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Côte d’Ivoire (Hosts) and DR Congo.

Additionally, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, The Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Mali, Mauritania, Morocco and Mozambique.

Other nations participating in the tournament include; Namibia, Nigeria, Senegal (Title Holders), South Africa, Tanzania, Tunisia, and Zambia.

The 2023 Africa Cup of Nations is the 34th edition of the competition, and this is the 2nd time in history that Ivory Coast will be hosting the tournament.

Cameroon won the competition the last time it was hosted by the Ivorians, as they defeated Nigeria 3-1 in the final, courtesy of goals from René Brice N'Djeya, Théophile Abega Mbida, and Ernest Ebongué.

The Super Eagles got their only goal through Mudashiru Lawal, netting in the early stages of that encounter.

Meanwhile, Senegal are the defending champions of the Africa Cup of Nations, having won the 2021 edition defeating Egypt 4-2 on penalties in the final after playing out a 0-0 draw in regulation time.


The competitive level of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations will be immense, as all the teams in the competition have enough quality to hurt one another.

It will be fascinating to see which player ends the tournament as the top scorer, or the player with the most assists.

Goalkeepers have always proved vital to several teams that win the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and as such it will be important to see the goalie that goes home with the Golden glove.

15 nations have won the Africa Cup of Nations in history, with Egypt winning the most titles in history (7).

Cameroon have won the tournament (5) times in history, while Ghana is the team with the 3rd most AFCON titles (4).

Nigeria have won the competition just (3) times in history, while hosts Ivory Coast and North African nation DR Congo have won it twice.

Senegal, Zambia, Tunisia, Sudan, Ethiopia, Morocco, South Africa, and Congo have won it just once in history.
