Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is reportedly among the top three managers that could replace Xavi Hernandez as Barcelona manager.

After mounting pressure, Xavi Hernandez threw in the towel and announced his decision to step down from his role as Barcelona manager at the end of the season.

Speaking shortly after Barcelona's 5-3 La Liga defeat to Villarreal, the former Al-Saad manager revealed he will down tools for a short sabbatical from football management.

The search for Xavi's replacement as Barcelona manager has been on with high-profile managers across top leagues making the list of the 44-year-old's potential successors.

Reports from the Spanish media have claimed Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is leading the list of new names that could take over Xavi.

Spanish reporter Gerardo Romero says Barcelona have shortlisted Arteta as a possible new manager to take over from Xavi.

It is not the first time Barcelona have eyed a move for Arteta to take over the reins at the club. While the club was scouting for a successor for Ronald Koeman, Arteta was also a prime target. However, the Spaniard fell out of favor given his lack of coaching experience then compared to his alternative Xavi Hernandez, who was coaching Qatar-based side Al-Saad.

With Xavi now set to exit the reins, Arteta is back again in the picture. Arteta worked under fellow Spanish Pep Guardiola as assistant manager before taking up the Arsenal job in 2019.

It hasn't been a groundbreaking start to his managerial career but the Spaniard has had a pretty gratifying run with the Gunners. He led Arsenal to challenge for the Premier League title last season, returning the club to Champions League football after seven years. Having re-established the London outfit as a potent domestic force in English football, Arteta has proved his managerial acumen despite being his first time as first-team manager.

Arteta is a Barcelona youth product and has adopted the club's possessive and attacking style of play - the tiki-taka - which has been refined by his former boss at Manchester City Pep Guardiola.

Other names linked to Barcelona job

Apart from Mikel Arteta, Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, who recently announced his decision to step down as Liverpool manager at the end of the season, has also been linked to Barcelona job.

Regarded as one of the best managers in Liverpool's history, Klopp won Liverpool's first League title in 30 years and won the Champions League with the club.

Former Bayern Munich manager, Julian Nagelsmann, who is currently in charge of Germany's national team, is also linked to the soon-to-be-vacant job at Barcelona.
