Mikel Arteta and his men break 89 years record following their decisive victory over West Ham United on Sunday, February 11.

What happened?

A sensational performance saw Arsenal thrash West Ham United at the London Stadium as five different players got on the scoresheet to record Gunners biggest-ever away victory in the English Premier League.

David Moyes and his men suffered the joint-heaviest home defeat in their league history.

The only other time the Hammers lost by six goals in the top flight was back in December 1963 against Blackburn Rovers where they recorded an 8-2 setback.

Arsenal registered their joint-biggest margin of triumph in an away league game and their first win by six goals since December 1935 when they beat Aston Villa 7-1.

The game was also Arsenal's joint biggest triumph in a London derby match in a league game.

However, for only the second time in the English Premier League, a side coached by David Moyes conceded 6-plus goals in a home game. The first time he suffered such a defeat was against Arsenal during his stint with Everton. He lost 6-1 against the Gunners in August 2009.

With Arsenal's 6-0 victory over West Ham, and Newcastle United's 8-0 win against Sheffield United in the 2023/24 campaign, it is the first time in the Premier League season that two different away teams scored 6-plus goals since the 1959/1960 campaign.

West Ham United vs Arsenal in brief

William Saliba opened the scoring with a simple header from Rice’s left-wing corner before Bukayo Saka made it two in the 41st minute by converting a crucial penalty.

Mikel Arteta’s side added a third, two minutes later when Gabriel scored another header from a set piece.

West Ham's misery grew further in first-half stoppage time when Leandro Trossard curled in the ball to make it 4-0.

In the second half, the performance continued and Bukayo Saka fizzed a low strike in at the near post to make it 100 goal contributions in his Arsenal career.

Then after the interval, Saka completed his brace before Declan Rice blasted in from 25 yards to cap off an excellent day for Mikel Arteta’s side, who recorded a fourth-straight win to keep the pressure on their title rivals (Liverpool and Man City).

What's next?

Arsenal head to Burnley next Saturday, February 17, at 3 pm before they return to Champions League action with a trip to Porto for the first leg of their round of 16 clash on Wednesday, February 21.
