Arsenal are close to agreeing a long-term contract extension with Takehiro Tomiyasu.

The Japanese had been an integral part of the squad with his defensive strength and coordination on the pitch.

The Japanese defender has 18 months remaining on his contract, with Mikel Arteta wanting to retain the player despite interest from Bayern Munich.

Arsenal are already securing the future of big-name players at the club after they agreed on a new contract with Bukayo Saka, Martin Odegaard, and William Saliba.

Tomiyasu's versatility represents Mikel Arteta's major asset in the Premier League and the Champions League this season.

Although he had been battling with injuries, they had stopped him from making more appearances.

It was revealed that Bayern Munich manager Thomas Tuchel wants to bring the defender to Germany in a bid to boost the aging defense.

The former Bologna defender produced a man-of-the-match performance against Lens in the Champions League on matchday 5.

He created chances for Gabriel Martinelli and Martin Odegaard to destroy Lens and secure a round of 16 Champions League qualification.

The defender was withdrawn against RC Lens due to precautionary reasons, with the manager wanting the Japanese to play more games in the Premier League this season.

The manager was full of praise for the Japanese.

After the game against RC Lens, the manager said, "I think he was excellent; he has played a lot of minutes, and we have a really congested period."

"We are very short at the back at the moment and we had to use the score to make some changes and give some rest and minutes to other players. He will continue to be with us."
