Benjamin Mendy has been handed additional time to sort out a six-figure tax debt as a buyer for his apartment is available, a court heard.

The High Court previously heard that HM Revenue and Customs are preparing a bankruptcy order against the full-back over a bill said to be about £800,000.

HM Revenue and Customs also sought the order subsequently at a hearing before a specialist insolvency judge.

Based on a hearing in court, it is understood that a sale was expected to be finalized in about eight weeks on the football's apartment in Macclesfield, Cheshire.

The hearing took place at a court in London and Benjamin Mendy is apparently set to sell the apartment for a lower amount compared to the price it was marketed.

Reports indicate that Benjamin Mendy's apartment was marketed at £5 million but was now being sold for £3.8 million.

King's Counsel Louis Doyle, who is representing Mendy expressed that the Frenchman “wants to get rid of this debt as quickly as he possibly can.”

Additionally, Doyle sternly said that if the timeframe for the sale is up and the apartment isn't sold yet then he could “have a very different fight" on his hands.

Louis Doyle said: “If we get 10 weeks down the line and it is still not sold, I accept I might have a very different fight on my hands.”

The hearing which was held in London was also briefed of Benjamin Mendy instituting legal action against Manchester City.

This is due to the English club halting his pay abruptly when he was charged with rape in 2021.

Mendy has subsequently been cleared of rape and attempted rape at Chester Crown Court.

KC Doyle stated that the 29-year-old's being put in a bankrupt state could have had a potentially damning impact on the footballer.

The matter is expected to be mediated later in 2024, with the way forward expected to be outlined for the parties involved.

During a previous hearing held in October 2023, Louis Doyle shared that Benjamin Mendy was ready to pay £20,000 monthly to the tax body from his salary with French club, Lorient.

However, the court was informed that these payments haven't seen the light of day, and this is because the footballer had not gotten the bonus he was expecting from the new club.

In concluding the court process for the day regarding the ongoing matter, Benjamin Mendy was granted a 12-week adjournment to allow for the sale of the apartment.

Judge Joseph Curl KC waded in on the matter and simply offered the defender the benefit of the doubt, echoing the statements of Barrister Louis Doyle.

The judge said: “Although I am troubled by the failure to pay the £20,000 per month and that this is now a fourth adjournment, I am persuaded that I should give what Mr Doyle described as 'the benefit of the doubt.”

Meanwhile, Mendy currently plays for Ligue 1 club Lorient, having joined the club on July 19, 2023, on a free transfer.

He has made 8 appearances for the French side, scoring 1 goal and providing no assist in all competitions.
