Carlo Ancelotti was emotionless after Real Madrid scored their 4th and 5th goal to secure a 5-2 victory over Atletico Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup semi-final.

Ancelotti watched his side come from behind twice in the game, equalizing the 1st goal and the 3rd to defeat their City rivals in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Marco Hermoso raced Atletico Madrid into the lead in the 6th minute, before Antonio Rudiger equalized for Real Madrid in the 20th minute.

Ferland Mendy got Los Blancos in front in the 29th minute, while Antoine Griezmann brought the game back to parity in the 37th minute.

The enthralling encounter became more intriguing in the dying embers of the game, with Rudiger accidentally scoring an own goal in the 78th minute.

However, his blushes would go on to be saved by Daniel Carvajal, who fired home a right-footed attempt into the roof of the net to drag the game to extra-time.

Atletico Madrid, who have seen Real Madrid show superiority in times past during extra time witnessed it once more with Carlo Ancelotti's side showing brilliance.

Atletico Madrid's Stefan Savic became the second player to score an own-goal in the game and that was the beginning of their capitulation.

Unfortunately, they didn't have the materials to trouble Real Madrid in extra time, with Brahim Diaz netting the icing on the cake in the 2nd minute of additional time in extra-time.

Fans and neutrals were indeed served a treat, with the game being explosive and utterly surreal.

Speaking after the game, Carlo Ancelotti expressed that Real Madrid are very happy to have won the game, as the encounter offered a rollercoaster of emotions, but his team never gave up.

“The team never gives up. It is the DNA of Real Madrid and a good learning experience for young people", Ancelotti said.

“We could lose today, but never give up. The team is very happy and we had to be calm because it was a game with a lot of emotions.

Ancelotti also stressed that Real Madrid are focused on winning the Spanish Super Cup with 90 minutes being the only separating factor between them and the title.

He said: “There are 90 minutes left to win the title and that is the objective.”

Carlo Ancelotti in December 2023 signed a contract extension with Los Blancos, which will keep him at the club until June 30, 2026.

He has had 2 stints at the Spanish side, winning 10 trophies, notably; 2 Champions League titles, 2 FIFA Club World Cups, 2 Uefa Super Cups, 1 LaLiga title, 2 Copa de Rey trophies, and 1 Spanish Super Cup.

Ancelotti will have to wait for the outcome of the other semi-final fixture between Osasuna and Barcelona to know the team that his side would have to surmount to win the Super Cup.

Barcelona are the defending champions of the crown, having defeated Real Madrid 3-1 on Sunday, January 15, 2023.
