It wasn't looking good at Stamford Bridge for Mauricio Pochettino as Chelsea stumbled to a shock 2-4 defeat to Gary O'Neil's Wolves.

A promising start saw the Blues race into the lead in the 19th minute. Moises Caicedo recorded his first goal contribution for the Blues, setting up terrific summer signing Cole Palmer at the back post to score the opening goal.

Wolves fought back immediately to level the score three minutes later with Matheus Cunha's strike. It would have ended squares at the interval but a ludicrous own goal by Axel Disasi gave Wolves a surprise lead.

Nevertheless, the Blues had more than enough time to pull a comeback but were dealt a heavy blow in the 63rd minute when Cunha scored again to extend the lead.

The game spiraled out of control for Chelsea in the 82nd minute when the Blues conceded a spot-kick and Cunha converted it to bag his hat-trick and humiliate the home side with a 4-1 scoreline. Thiago Silva would score a late consolation goal for the Blues two minutes later as Wolves held on to inflict a heavy defeat on the London club.

As expected, Chelsea fans were unimpressed with the subpar performance against Wolves. The players were booed all through the game as they went down easily against the visitors.

Speaking after the match, Mauricio Pochettino rendered a groveling apology to the fans for the poor performance.

"I want to apologize to the fans.

"The fans were hurting today because they were supporting the team. It was tough, tough afternoon for everyone. The players, for us, the fans.

"I feel sorry because I think we started the game well, scoring the goal and then we made some mistakes that you cannot afford in the Premier League and gave the option to the opponent to score. We concede two own goals.

Chelsea's top-four chances has gotten slimmer with the defeat to Wolves. The Blues could only hope for a magical turn of events to finish in the top four this season. They have dropped off the top half of the table, sitting 11th on the table with 31 points.

Mauricio Pochettino will hope to make amends and return to winning ways when they take on Aston Villa on Wednesday, February 7 in an FA Cup replay.
