Democracy Day in Nigeria is celebrated annually on June 12 to commemorate the restoration of democracy in 1999. Democracy Day was previously observed on May 29 but was changed to June 12 by former president Muhammadu Buhari to honor the late MKO Abiola, the winner of the historic 1993 elections.
