Government officials and Police meet over Planned transport protest in Lagos

A planned transport protest by Lagos public transport drivers has led to a meeting between the police, government officials and other stakeholders. The planned protest was scheduled for Monday, November 13, 2023 and this has become an issue in Lagos state. The severity of the matter lead to a meeting being called for by the stakeholders involved in this matter.

The exact reasons for this protest hasn't been disclosed by the Lagos drivers but there is likely to be more than one reason which has built up to this point. It's no news the kind of difficulties and challenges been faced by drivers especially in Lagos state. one of these could be the alleged extortion by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) as well as the Task Force.

Due to this issue, some commuters in Lagos have also been left stranded because of the protest that has rocked various parts of Lagis Some parts of Lagos state have been affected by the protest including Iyana Ipaja, Egbeda, Agege, and few others. News updates has revealed that Gbadaga Expressway is all clear at the moment.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, shared that a meeting between the stakeholders is set to be held today, Monday November 13, 2023. He shared this on his X (twitter) handle on Sunday, November 12. He revealed that the leadership of the NURTW would be having this meeting alongside other stakeholders

According to the statement on Twitter, it states "The Lagos State Police Command has concluded a stakeholders’ meeting aimed at addressing the proposed Monday November 13 protest by public transport drivers in Lagos State. At the meeting attended by the leadership of the Police Command, Lagos State Government, LASTMA and the NURTW, germane issues and concerns raised by the drivers were critically looked into. The stakeholders, at the conclusion of the meeting, agreed to work together to ensure obedience to all traffic laws on the part of the transporters and the checkmating of excesses of law enforcement officers within the state. In addition, the NURTW agreed to a larger meeting tomorrow Monday, November 13, 2023"

He also revealed those who were present at the meeting including the Deputy Commissioners of Police Waheed Ayilara (SCID), Fatai Tijani (Operations), Khan Salihu (Administration), Commander Rapid Response Squad (RRS) and many others.

The statement also read "The Lagos State Police Command uses this medium to assure Lagosians that the Command has made adequate deployments in line with prioritizing their safety and security, while encouraging them to go about their lawful duties without fear of harassment or intimidation."
