The European Super League has continued to be an object of contention among football stakeholders in Europe.

The breakaway competition, pushed by A22 Sports, was meant to replace Europe's elite club competition - the UEFA Champions League.

The idea was birthed in 2021 under the auspices of two top Spanish clubs - Barcelona and Real Madrid. Manchester United, Chelsea, Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool, Arsenal, including Juventus were among the top clubs who came together to realize the controversial football project back in 2021.

All the English clubs were forced to withdraw from the project following heavy protests by English football fans. All other cohorts withdrew from the competition as well, leaving the ringleaders Real Madrid and Barcelona.

UEFA moved to block clubs from joining the competition with sanctions. However, in a groundbreaking European Court of Justice ruling in December 2023, UEFA and FIFA were barred from blocking clubs from joining the competition. ECJ argued attempts to block clubs from joining the breakaway competition was a breach of European competition law.

With the legal barrier to the formation of the European Super League lifted, Real Madrid, Barcelona, and A22 Sports proclaimed victory, and evolved a new format for the competition to comprise 64 teams, divided into three tiers with relegations and promotions as normal domestic leagues.

While ECJ's ruling was crucial to proponents of the European Super League, they, however, struggle with the unpopularity of the project among top clubs in Europe and domestic FAs.

Most top clubs in Europe have issued statements reaffirming their allegiance and loyalty to UEFA, FIFA, and domestic football competitions while distancing themselves from the European Super League.

Italian Football Federation, FGIC, are among domestic football bodies that have denounced the European Super League.

As per Fabrizio Romano, FGIC have approved a clause that will prevent Serie A clubs from joining the European Super League.

With the new clause, any club that joins the European Super League will not compete in Serie A from next season.

Fabrizio Romano said;

"Italian Federation FIGC decided to approve a clause to prohibit access to the Super League for Italian clubs.

"FIGC will not allow Serie A clubs to join any competition other than Uefa, Fifa, and FIGC.

"If any club joins the Super League, it will be excluded from Serie A 2024/2025."

Other domestic football associations are planning measures to block domestic clubs from joining the European Super League.
