The rate at which medical doctors are migrating from the country to seek greener pastures in developed countries is alarming. This has been a topic of discussion in Nigeria and suggestions are being brought up on how to decrease the numbers.

Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, Lagos State's Deputy Governor has suggested increasing the training capacity of more medical practitioners to fill the void that the migration of medical professionals has left in Nigeria.

More people should be adequately trained so they can fill up empty roles in the health sectors, for the betterment of the country.

He further emphasized that he isn't against the migration of doctors from the country as it is human nature to desire a change of environment. However, actions must be taken to ensure there's no shortage of medical personnel in the country irrespective of the number of doctors relocating abroad.

In his words, "Human migration is normal. People would leave, and people would come. But as a country, we can train more doctors."

“I am not against the brain drain of medical doctors, but what we need is to create a pipeline to train more doctors instead of complaining that medical personnel are leaving the country."

He concluded by saying, "Our medical colleges need to increase their capacity by training more people."
