Lake Flood in India leads to death of 40 people

A recent Glacial lake burst led to serious flooding in Imoda and this in turn led to the death of over 40 people. From this same incident, over 100 people have been declared missing as some were swept away by the flood. These 40 people have been confirmed dead in this incident.

Indian officials revealed that the flooding occurred when a glacial lake burst and this had been what caused the serious flooding of the area. This incident occurred in Sikkim area and this was on Wednesday, October 4, 2023.
The Glacial lake which burst was from the neighboring state, Nepal. Some counties also revealed that the rise in temperature which will cause ice to melt may lead to similar incidences as these.

Indian officials alongside the search-and-rescue teams have been working on saving victims as well as recovering bodies from the incident. They were able to elrecover some more bodies overnight after the incident had occurred.

According to the officials, about 19 bodies were recovered in Sikkim state. According to Shama Parveen who is a district magistrate in a neighbouring state known as West Bengal, revealed that they also recovered a total of 21 bodies after the incident. This occurred over a period of the past 3 days when the flooding begun

The state officials also disclosed that more than a 100 people are also missing and then almost 8,000 were displaced and have sought for shelter in some relief camps which had been set up at guesthouses,schools, and government offices.

The government officials also revealed that they are working towards evacuating some others, especially tourists who have been stranded using helicopters. They revealed that this will be made possible as the weather conditions are improving.
