Have you ever wondered who invented the idea of staying in a room with others while listening to someone speak, with the idea of gaining knowledge and following instructions?

Though early education can be associated with philosophy and the teachings of Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle, who were at the center of education in the early times. Learning can also be obtained at home within the family in the form of learning values, beliefs and instructions, Horace Mann wanted a formal system that involved proper orientation, guidance, and learning. Therefore, it is safe to say that there was a man who pioneered the advent of modern-day education.

Who invented school and why?

Meet Horace Mann, he was an educational revolutionary who was born in 1796 and died in 1859. He was born into a simple American family, where his father was a farmer. Mann loved visiting the library and reading books to gain more knowledge. He was elected in 1827 to the legislature in Massachusetts, where he began his quest for education.

While Mann worked in 1837 as the secretary of education in the American state of Massachusetts, he proposed a universal schooling system that would make learning possible in the global system.

Why?

1. Mann saw education as a chance to bridge the gap between individuals from different backgrounds. He believed that for a society to progress, equality would be present to a certain level.

2. To Mann, education could develop an individual's character and instill values and beliefs in him. Therefore, he did not only view education as a way to bring people together, but to also foster values and promote moral standards in the society.

3. Mann's view on education supported the promotion of unity in diversity. He believed that education is important in building a nation's image in terms of social class and a shared national identity.
