MTN to Lease Spectrum from T2 Mobile, Strengthening Network and Digital Access

MTN Nigeria Communications Plc has secured regulatory approval from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to lease frequency spectrum from T2 Mobile Limited (formerly 9Mobile), in a move designed to boost network capacity and expand digital inclusion nationwide.

Key Details:
• Effective Date: October 1, 2025
• Lease Terms: Initial period of three years
• Spectrum Covered:
• 5 MHz Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) in the 900 MHz band
• 15 MHz FDD in the 1800 MHz band

This leasing arrangement ties directly into MTN’s national roaming agreement with T2 Mobile, enabling MTN to manage additional network traffic from T2’s customers using its infrastructure.

Why It Matters
1. Industry Collaboration: Reflects MTN’s strategy of infrastructure sharing and building a stronger, more collaborative telecoms ecosystem.

2. Network Strength: The additional spectrum enhances MTN’s ability to deliver faster, more reliable services to customers.

3. Digital Inclusion: Supports Nigeria’s broader goals of extending connectivity and digital access to more people.

What MTN’s CEO Said

Karl Toriola, CEO of MTN Nigeria, described the deal as a milestone aligned with the Ambition 2025 strategy.

“By leveraging additional spectrum resources, we are enhancing network capacity in a cost-efficient and environmentally sustainable way,” he said.

He also noted that MTN is fostering innovation through its partnership with T2 Mobile and onboarding of Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs), which will drive long-term growth in the Nigerian telecom market.

Other Developments
• MTN disclosed it will not renew its existing one-year spectrum lease with Natcom Development & Investment Ltd, which expires November 29, 2025.

• That lease currently covers 5 MHz FDD in the 900 MHz band and 10 MHz FDD in the 1800 MHz band across 17 states.

• The company reaffirmed its commitment to investing in infrastructure and partnerships that enable innovation and high-quality service delivery.

✅ In summary: MTN’s spectrum lease from T2 Mobile is a strategic move to strengthen network quality, deepen collaboration in Nigeria’s telecom industry, and push forward digital inclusion goals.
