On Monday, January 8th, the National Universities Commission (NUC) denied the report circulating in the media that the union uncovered the names of 100 fake professors in Nigerian Universities. This was disclosed in a communique released by NUC.

It stated that in 2019, the union initiated a verification process regarding academics in Universities across the country. However, it didn't release the list of fake professors in 2024, unlike the news making rounds in the media.

The union said it had intended to publish the complete list of Professors in Nigerian Universities but was delayed after discovering that some Associate Professors had been listed as full professors. The statement categorically stated that "It is essential to also state clearly that the Commission as a responsible Federal Government Agency, does not engage in half-baked exercises capable of tarnishing the image of Nigeria and the NUC. That was why the Commission deemed it necessary to share the collated data with the Nigerian Universities for authentication by the competent authorities as to who qualifies to be a full professor”, the regulatory agency said in the statement."

Institutions such as the University of Lagos, University of Ilorin, University of Nigeria, Obafemi Awolowo University, University of Ibadan, Usman Danfodiyo University, and Covenant University, were listed among the universities harboring fake professors in the dismissed list.
