Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis was forcibly removed from the stadium after he reportedly chased referee Paul Tierney into the tunnel.

The unusual occurrence happened following Liverpool's controversial late winning goal against Forest on Saturday, March 2.

An eye-witness working for BBC 5 Live confirmed that the incident occurred immediately after Forest's 1-0 defeat, with Marinakis being allegedly removed by security.

What happened?

Substitute Darwin Nunez scored the only goal of the game beyond the eight minutes of added time.

The winning goal was a devastating blow for struggling Forest, denying them a crucial point and giving Liverpool an advantage in the title race.

Meanwhile, Forest were particularly upset with referee Paul Tierney for stopping the game while they were on the attack, due to Ibrahima Konate's head injury just before stoppage time.

The frustration was heightened when Tierney awarded the ball to Liverpool's goalkeeper, Caoimhin Kelleher, even though Forest's Callum Hudson-Odoi was in possession when play was halted.

After the official restarted play with an uncontested drop ball for Liverpool, Nunez then took advantage of the moment and scored the winning goal converting Alexis Mac Allister's cross.

The Nottingham Forest owner was furious after Liverpool scored the controversial late winner.

Marinakis, first-team coach Steven Reid, and other staff were seen confronting the referee at the final whistle, leading to a red card for the Forest coach.

The argument continued down the tunnel, with BBC Radio Five Live reporter Rob Schofield witnessing the explosive scenes involving Marinakis.

According to Schofield, he witnessed the ugly occurrence in the tunnel, where Steven Reid became visibly frustrated after he was shown a red card.

Schofield revealed further that Both Reid and Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis followed referee Paul Tierney and fourth official Graham Scott to the referee's office, shouting at him.

He reported: "You rarely see scenes like that in the tunnel. We saw Steven Reid getting frustrated. He and the Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis pursued referee Paul Tierney and fourth official Graham Scott to the referee's office, yelling at them: 'Respect the players! Respect the players! This happens every week! Respect the players!'

Nottingham Forest later released a statement supporting their owner, Evangelos Marinakis, in response to the recent controversy surrounding him.

The club affirmed that Marinakis remained calm and only had a short interaction with the referee, and they maintained that security was not involved.

Meanwhile, The Professional Games Libes Officials (PGMOL ) acknowledged last night that Tierney had made a mistake according to Forest's official ref advisor and former Prem whistler Mark Clattenburg.

Clattenburg said: “There have been one or two decisions against them — decisions that the PGMOL accepted have been a mistake."

Marinakis, a Greek shipping magnate worth £2.5billion, acquired Forest in 2017.

The 1-0 defeat to Liverpool places Forest in 17th place, just four points above the relegation zone, and they could potentially face sanctions for their financial situation.

What's next?

Liverpool will next be seen in action on Thursday, March 7 when they take on Sparta Prague in the Europa League round of 16.

On the other hand, Nottingham Forest will take the fight to The American Express Community Stadium to play Brighton in the premier league next week Sunday, March 10.
