Tinubu was at the 63rd Ordinary Session of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of ECOWAS held in the capital of Guinea-Bissau on Sunday where the title was conferred on him.

He succeeded the President of Guinea-Bissau Umaro Embalo, making him the 37th chairman of the organization.

While receiving the title at the ECOWAS summit on Sunday, he said, "We will take democracy seriously. Democracy is very tough but is the best form of government"

The position of ECOWAS chairman is usually rotated among presidents of member states and the tenure is held for a period of one year.

Other past presidents and heads of states in Nigeria have also occupied this position such as Muhammadu Buhari, Yakubu Gowon, Olusegun Obasanjo among others.
