Paris Saint Germain have parted ways with head coach Christophe Galtier days after guiding the club to the Ligue 1 title.

According to insiders, Paris Saint Germain sports director Luis Campos notified Galtier on Tuesday, 6th of June, that he was sacked by the French club.

The Frenchman led the French powerhouse to the 2022-23 league title but fell flat to produce success in the UEFA Champions League, with the current Ligue 1 champions knocked out by Bayern Munich in the round of 16, while they were also knocked out of the French Cup by Marseille.

Meanwhile, PSG have identified Galtier’s replacement with former Bayern Munich head coach Julian Nagelsmann set to continue talks with the club.

The source claimed that PSG are expecting Nagelsmann in the next 24 hours to land in Paris after the club announced Galtier’s departure.

The club reportedly had discussions with former Spain and Barcelona coach Luis Enrique but has since prioritized a move to hire Nagelsmann, who is reportedly eager to have Thierry Henry join his staff as an assistant.

The French champions are optimistic that a deal can be reached for Nagelsmann and Henry to join the team.

Galtier has also coached at Lille and Saint-Etienne, and he led Nice to a ninth-place finish in 2021-22 season before joining PSG this past summer.

His last game in charge ended in a 3-2 loss to Clermont Foot this past weekend, even though PSG had already clinched the title. It meant Les Parisiens’ ultimate margin of victory over surprise team Lens was only one point.

Although Galtier had success in the league in his first year at the helm after replacing Mauricio Pochettino, the team’s performance in the regular season was not up to standards.

Pochettino was under similar pressures, the Argentine lasted only 18 months in the PSG dugout despite leading the club to a league title and a cup final in his only full season in charge.

PSG’s management is not evaluated based on domestic success, but rather on how they fare in European competition.

The team’s showing in the Champions League this season wasn’t very good, as they came in second in their group behind Benfica and were then eliminated by Bayern in the round of 16 without scoring a single goal.

Never having lifted the UEFA Champions League trophy has been a cause of immense unhappiness for PSG’s management and fans.

The only time they’ve ever made it to the Champions League final was in 2020 when Thomas Tuchel was their coach.

What’s next for Paris Saint Germain?

Nagelsmann, who knocked PSG out of the Champions League this season, is expected to take over as head coach.

Manuel Ugarte, a midfielder for Sporting CP, and the recently released Marco Asensio are two names that come to mind as possible early additions.

Both Lionel Messi and Sergio Ramos, are at the top of the list of high-profile departures. Those whose contracts have expired will also be leaving the club this summer.
