Nigeria at a Crossroads: Yoruba Groups Warn of a New Terror Phase and Demand Restructuring Before 2027 Elections
Nigeria is facing what a broad coalition of Yoruba socio‑political organisations describes as an emerging and more dangerous phase of terrorism, and they are urging urgent political reform to avert deeper crisis ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Punch Newspapers
The Alliance for Yoruba Democratic Movements (AYDM) — an umbrella coalition of more than 130 groups and community‑based organisations — sounded this warning in a communique at the end of a two‑day conference in Lagos that drew over 800 delegates from across the old Western Region and beyond.

Claim of Evolving Terror Threat
In their statement, AYDM leaders said Nigeria’s insecurity landscape is shifting. They pointed specifically to recent incidents involving improvised explosive devices (IEDs) — including a deadly case in Kwara State where an IED reportedly killed a commercial driver and injured a mother and child — as evidence that extremist tactics are expanding beyond traditional armed banditry and criminal violence.

They warned that domestic extremist elements are exploiting wider geopolitical tensions — notably global instability linked to conflicts in the Middle East — and alleged that some political actors or entrenched interests within the country may be indirectly supporting or enabling terrorism for their own ends.

While Nigeria’s insecurity is complex and driven by many factors — including long‑running insurgency in the northeast, banditry in the northwest, and farmer–herder conflicts — these assertions show the growing anxiety among parts of civil society about how violence is evolving and the potential consequences for national stability.

Restructuring: The Core Demand
At the heart of the AYDM’s message was a call for national restructuring — particularly decentralising political power and security architecture — well ahead of the 2027 general elections.

What they are asking for includes:
Creation of state police forces to improve responsiveness and accountability in local communities.

Decentralisation of security institutions, including regional commands for military training and operations — moves they say would allow states greater control over their defence and policing.

A more truly federal political structure that reflects Nigeria’s diversity and gives constituent units greater autonomy.

According to the coalition, such changes would help reduce tensions, build trust between citizens and government, and strengthen the nation’s ability to manage conflict and protect lives.

Rejection of Military Intervention
Though critical of governance failures, the coalition was explicit in rejecting any attempt to resolve Nigeria’s crises through military rule. They warned that a coup or similar intervention would likely provoke widespread resistance and unleash deeper violence, potentially drawing in armed civilian responses.

Instead, the groups urged Nigerians to mobilise within democratic frameworks and defend democratic institutions even as they call for reforms.

Power Rotation and National Unity
Another key point from the communique was a call for power rotation in the presidency: the coalition insisted that the next president in 2027 should come from the South, arguing that maintaining the status quo would further strain Nigeria’s fragile unity. They pointed out that since independence, the North has held power longer than the South, a factor they believe contributes to distrust among regions.

Why This Matters
Nigeria’s security landscape has been deteriorating for years, with terror attacks, kidnappings, and mass violence affecting lives and livelihoods across several states. The AYDM’s warning comes at a moment when citizens and leaders alike are debating the best path forward — whether through stronger central authority or deeper decentralisation of power.
Their position encapsulates a broader public debate about Nigeria’s federal structure, the effectiveness of security forces, and how best to preserve democratic governance while addressing deep‑rooted political and social grievances.
