Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso is a Nigerian politician born on 21st October 1956. He is 67 years old. Kwankwaso served as the former governor of Kano State from 1999 to 2003 and from 2011 to 2015 respectively.

Early Life

Rabiu Kwankwaso was born in 1956 into a Sunni Fulani family of the Genawa Fulani Clan. During that period, Kwankwaso's father was the Sarkin Fulani Dagacin Kwankwaso before he was given the title of Majidadin Kano, Hakimin Madobi, the District Head of Madobi by the Kano Emirate Council. Rabiu Kwankwaso attended Kwankwaso Primary School, Gwarzo Boarding Senior Primary School, Wudi Craft School and Kano Technical College. He obtained his National Diploma (ND) and Higher National Diploma (HND) from Kaduna Polytechnic. While he was in school, he was an elected member of the Kano State Students Association.

He traveled to Middlesex Polytechnic, United Kingdom for his postgraduate studies from 1982 to 1983. He also got a Master's Degree in civil engineering from Loughborough University of Technology in 1985. In 2022, he obtained a Doctorate degree in civil engineering from Sharda university in India.

Kwankwaso started working at the Kano State Water Resources and Engineering Construction Agency in 1975. He served there for 17 years and was promoted to various ranks till he became the principal water engineer. Rabiu Kwankwaso joined politics in 1992 under the umbrella of the Social Democratic Party (SDP). That same year, he got elected as the member of the House of Representatives for Madobi Federal Constituency. Kwankwaso left SDP and joined the Democratic Party of Nigeria (DPN) during the political transition program of Gen. Sani Abacha. He later joined the People's Democratic Party (PDP) in 1998 and contested for governor of Kano State in 1999.

Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso became the Kano State governor from May 29, 1999 to 2003. His dreams to be re-elected for the second term was short-lived when he lost to Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau. He was appointed the Minister of Defence under President Olusegun Obasanjo from 2003 to 2007. He resigned from his ministerial role to contest the Kano State gubernatorial elections but he lost again. Luckily, Kwankwaso's dream came to fruition and he became governor for the second time and served from 2011 to 2015. In 2013, Kwankwaso decamped from the People's Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress (APC). In 2014, Kwankwaso contested the APC presidential primaries. He came second with a total of 974 votes losing to Muhammadu Buhari who had a total of 3,430 votes.

In 2018, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso decamped from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the People's Democratic Party (PDP) with an aim of contesting for the presidential primaries. Atiku Abubakar won the primaries with 1,532 votes while Kwankwaso came 4th behind Aminu Tambuwal and Bukola Saraki. In 2022, he left the People's Democratic Party (PDP) and joined the New Nigeria People's Party (NNPP). He won the presidential primaries and became the flag bearer of the party. During the 2023 presidential elections, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso came fourth with over 1 million votes.
