The January transfer window has opened its doors since the beginning of the year and English Premier League clubs have been busy planning their business after a long season.

This transfer is usually a month when clubs will be looking out for short-term solutions to solve their initial mid-season problems.

Chelsea, among others, are the club to strengthen their team following a disastrous campaign since Todd Boehly took over as the new owner.

After spending more than 1 billion pounds across the last three transfer windows, buying of players will surely have to slow down in other not to be punished for Financial Fair Play rules.

However, It's been an up-and-down since Mauricio Pochettino became the new manager of the West London club and the Argentine will be willing to make several amendments to the team.

What does the team need?

Manager Mauricio Pochettino has regularly complained about Chelsea's incapability to take their chances in front of goal so a striker is top of the wish list.

They'll also need a backup goalkeeper behind Robert Sanchez and a centre-back to eventually replace 39-year-old Thiago Silva.

They will also need to strengthen their backup options at full-back to help Reece James and Ben Chilwell, who have both recently suffered injuries, might be a long-term objective.

Who could be leaving?

Below is the list of players who could be leaving the club either permanently or temporarily.

Any number of fringe players. Defenders Trevoh Chalobah and Ian Maatsen are likely to depart, while winger Noni Madueke could be allowed to leave on loan.

Chelsea would be ready to allow left-back Marc Cucurella to go unless Chilwell's injury problems continue.

Renewed interest in midfielder Conor Gallagher would create an issue for Chelsea, should they cash in on a player who has 18 months left on his current deal and played the massive majority of games under Pochettino?

Some reports suggested that Chelsea would at least be willing to listen to offers.

Trevoh Chalobah

The English player is yet to play this season after suffering an injury late on in the preseason, and despite the shockingly poor defensive mistakes the Blues have made so far this season, Trevoh Chalobah could still find it hard to make it back into the lineup at Chelsea.

The player has been heavily linked with a move to Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund but the rumors have died down in recent weeks until the academy graduate can prove his fitness.

It's entirely possible he stays and attempts to force his way back in after the festive period but equally reasonable that he goes in January if the right offer comes in, with his worth estimated to be around £18 million, according to Transfermarkt.

Ian Maatsen

The Dutch player hasn't left much to the imagination when discussing his future with the Blues.

He almost left in the summer in a return move to Burnley where he spent all of last season smoothing his career under Vincent Kompany but rejected a £30 million deal that Chelsea were open to in an attempt to fight for a place under Pochettino's squad.

It looked like he'd gone a long way to securing that place after a fantastic preseason out in the U.S. but since then, he's recorded just 106 Premier League minutes over seven appearances, five of which have been less than 13 minutes.

Recent reports suggest the player could yet sign a new contract and then be sent out on loan in January.

Armando Broja

The player's recovery from a severe ACL injury last season saw him score in just 19 minutes against Fulham.

Armando Broja has become a silently active commodity on the transfer market. The 22-year-old is a target of Fulham as well as West Ham who have been relatively open about their interest in the striker.

Despite praise from Mauricio Pochettino throughout the season, the Albanian international may see a move away from Stamford Bridge, with the player estimated to be around £28 million.

Noni Madueke

It is possible that Madueke could see himself leaving Chelsea on loan after the introduction of Cole Palmer into the squad.

The former PSV Eindhoven player has essentially been pushed to the wayside by his compatriot despite some outstanding performances for the London team in recent months.

The London-born winger is estimated to be worth 21 million pounds.

Marc Cucurella

The Spaniard was close to joining Chelsea's arch-rival Manchester United during the summer transfer window, but due to his poor performances, the Red Devils couldn't proceed with the deal.

Therefore, the Blues could send the former Brighton star on loan or sell him permanently this January.

Conor Gallagher

Chelsea were eager to fill the midfield void and let the English player leave in other to buy more experienced players but a recent report claimed that the 23-year-old who is estimated to be worth £42 million is ready to fight for his place under Pochettino

What's next?

It remains to be seen if Chelsea will let these players leave the club or retain some who could still add value to the team.
