The game took on a frantic pace from the start as the two sides made well their attempts to outplay the other and take the lead. It was an engaging encounter, largely open from both ends.

Speedy counters, strong tackles, resolute defending, and excellent goalkeeping kept both sides at bare. There were chances for the Bafana Bafana as well as the Blue Sharks with the latter pulling more strings on the attack.

At the half-hour, it was still barren as both sides failed to break the goal. South Africa were reeling under pressure but a solid wall at the back kept them in the game.

Cape Verde were forced into heavy defending duties when South Africa broke on counterattacks.
