Portugal will be thrilled to see Morocco bundled out of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) by South Africa.

Bafana Bafana eliminated the 2022 FIFA World Cup semi-finalists and they celebrated the victory using Cristiano Ronaldo's iconic “peace” celebration.

Morocco were tipped by many to win the crown, following their impressive showing in recent years, particularly their 2022 World Cup outing in Qatar.

However, Evidence Makgopa's 57th-minute goal and Teboho Mokoena's free-kick condemned them to a tournament exit in the last 16.

The Atlas Lions have won the tournament just once in the country's history, winning it in 1976 in Ethiopia.

They lost out in the quarter-final of the 2021 edition hosted in Cameroon, after losing 2-1 to Egypt at the Stade Omnisport Ahmadou Ahidjo in Yaounde.

South Africa are chasing their second title in history, having won the tournament on home soil in 1996.

Hugo Broos' side have been impressive so far in the tournament, and they take on Cape Verde on Saturday, February 3, 2024.

Interestingly, Bafana Bafana are winless in their last 3 meetings with The Blue Sharks, losing twice and drawing 1.

Both nations last clashed on September 5, 2017, in a World Cup group qualification encounter, with Cape Verde coming out 2-1 victors.

Anyway, back to the crux of the conversation involving Morocco and Portugal, it appears South Africa poured salt on the injury of Walid Regragui's side with the iconic celebration.

Definitely, this was a tournament where Morocco had high hopes due to their showing in recent years, but the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations has been a hub for surprises and upsets.

The bug caught up with them and they will have to look forward to the 2025 edition for some respite, where they will be the host.

A fan on X made a hilarious post pointing many towards the celebration, writing:

“Morocco Eliminated Portugal during the World Cup and today South Africa Eliminated Morocco from the Afcon

“South Africans Celebrated Using Ronaldo’s Celebration”

Morocco defeated Portugal in the quarter-final of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar 1-0, courtesy of a headed goal from Youssef En-Nesyri in the 42nd minute.

The encounter was choked and stuffed with prime banter, including that of a young girl, who poked fun at the exit of Cristiano Ronaldo from the competition.

The young Moroccan fan was seen saying in a spiteful clip, “Where is Ronaldo? He is crying in his car. Poor Ronaldo”.

The footage went viral and it elicited many reactions, including vile reactions, which was reported to have even had a mental effect on the well-being of the young Moroccan fan.

Morocco made it to the Semi-final of the 2022 FIFA World Cup, before losing to France 2-0 and 2-1 to Croatia in the losers' final.
