TotalEnergies Unveils Game-Changer: Ubeta Gas Project to Add 70,000boe/d by 2027

Full Breakdown of the News

TotalEnergies has taken a bold step forward in deepening its energy footprint in Nigeria with the announcement of the Ubeta gas project, now officially in the execution phase. This significant onshore development is located within Oil Mining Lease (OML) 58 and is expected to contribute approximately 70,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day (boe/d)—including condensates—to Nigeria’s energy output.

The announcement was made by Matthieu Bouyer, Country Chair of TotalEnergies in Nigeria, during a panel session at the NOG Energy Week 2025 in Abuja. According to Bouyer, first gas from the Ubeta project is projected for 2027, marking a critical milestone in Nigeria’s gas-driven transition strategy.

Bouyer emphasized that this achievement reflects robust collaboration with key regulators and partners, specifically the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) and the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC). Their consistent support has reportedly given TotalEnergies a head start in project execution.

In addition to Ubeta, Bouyer spotlighted progress on another promising asset—the IMA gas field, located offshore within OMLs 112 and 117 under the AMNI/TotalEnergies Joint Venture. This offshore project is currently at the Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) stage, with Final Investment Decision (FID) expected in 2026. Like Ubeta, the IMA field also targets production levels of 70,000 boe/d.

Beyond these headline projects, Bouyer mentioned a number of other strategic activities:
• Ongoing development of the Ntokon discovery, made two years ago.
• Acquisition of new oil blocks in the last 12 months.
• Ongoing engagement in Nigeria’s domestic gas market, including a key role in NLNG Train 7.

On the innovation front, TotalEnergies is also introducing AUSEA—an advanced airborne spectrometer technology used for detecting methane leaks during upstream operations. This is part of the company’s strategy to produce cleaner energy and aligns with its low-carbon objectives. Bouyer noted that TotalEnergies is working closely with the NNPC on this initiative, reinforcing a shared commitment to responsible energy development.

While acknowledging that renewable energy remains a small part of TotalEnergies’ Nigerian operations, Bouyer hinted at increased focus in this area moving forward.

Bottom Line:
The Ubeta and IMA gas projects underscore TotalEnergies’ long-term confidence in Nigeria’s energy landscape and signal a substantial boost to the country’s gas output. With execution timelines in place and regulatory backing strong, these projects could reshape domestic energy supply and reinforce Nigeria’s role in the global energy market.
