Wayne Rooney has expressed that he thinks Manchester United will not make the top four at the end of the campaign.

Rooney apparently made this assertion due to the Red Devils' inconsistent display in the 2023/24 season.

Wayne Rooney shared his thoughts on Manchester United's top 4 chances after they defeated one of his former clubs, Everton, 2-0 in the crunch game on Saturday, March 9, 2024.

The win came after subsequent league defeats against Fulham and Manchester City, with Erik Ten Hag's side 8 points off Aston Villa, who sit 4th on the log.

The Villains face 5th-placed Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, March 10, 2024, with both teams aiming to outwit each other.

Rio Ferdinand on TNT Sports suggested that Manchester United “will be aiming for a draw” in the game between Spurs and Aston Villa, while ex-Man City man Joleon Lescott said that a “club of this stature should not be in this situation” and that it should be in their “own hands”.

Rooney providing his response to his punditry colleagues indicated that Manchester United are too inconsistent and are shipping in too many opportunities to qualify for Champions League places.

The Englishman said: “It’s not sustainable and that’s what we have seen in the season.

“I don’t think they will make top four because they have to win every game, they are inconsistent and I can’t see them winning every game.

He added that Manchester United are a very open side that gives teams room to exploit them.

Rooney said: “They are conceding too many chances, it is too easy for teams to get opportunities.”

Despite the 2-0 victory at the Theater of Dreams against Everton, Ferdinand cautioned that Manchester United can't be so loose on the ball when they battle Liverpool in the 4th round of the FA Cup on Sunday, March 17, 2024.

He said: “You cannot keep doing that at this level. They are not a team that dominates the ball.

“They play like that against Liverpool, that open, the spaces around Casemiro, it will be a different story.”

Erik Ten Hag's side needed two goals from the penalty spot to claim victory against Everton, courtesy of Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford.

Ahead of the clash, Wayne Rooney claimed that he didn't have much sympathy for Marcus Rashford's struggle this season.

He stated that the 26-year-old is the “one player” who could shatter his scoring record at Old Trafford, but that he might need to exit Manchester United to get his career blazing again.

Anyway, Manchester United can still qualify for next season's UEFA Champions League if they finish 5th in the league this season.

The Red Devils' fate if they finish 5th will depend on how English teams perform in European competitions this campaign.
